Treated like a live-in maid, Margaret Wallace suffers abuse and starvation at her eldest son Aaron Wallace's home. Using money from collecting scrap metal, she buys a lottery ticket and wins five million dollars. To test her children, she hides the win. Aaron and his wife fake kindness, but eventually kick her out. With nowhere to go, she turns to her youngest son Eric Wallace, who rejects her. Thankfully, her daughter-in-law Hannah Wallace takes her in, so Margaret reveals her secret. When Margaret falls ill, her sons refuse to pay for her care. Eric even forbids Hannah from helping. Disgusted, Hannah demands a divorce and covers the bills herself. Touched, Margaret gives her the lottery ticket. On her deathbed, Margaret sees only greed in her children's eyes. Heartbroken, she claims the ticket is destroyed. As her sons frantically search for the pieces, Margaret dies in bitter disappointment.
